In an exclusive interview to iGaming Business in line with the iGaming North America Conference which took place in Las Vegas on March 6th 2012, Mark Lipparelli, Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board stated that intra-state online poker could be introduced before the year 2012 comes to an end.

Mr. Lipparelli announced that online poker operators with licences and technical systems endorsed by the State of Nevada could indeed start offering real money online poker.  He further went into details as regards the timeline for Nevada’s online gaming application process and confirmed that operators with approved licences and systems could start operating without the need for further legislation.

Licence applicants will most probably start appearing on the agenda of the Nevada Gaming Control Board around the month of May and June.  Applicants having had their licences successfully approved will then undergo a technical evaluation.  Though the timeframe as regards this part of the process still remains to be defined, it is probable that the first set of approved systems will be launched in the fall.

Operators filing for application will undergo their technical evaluation by late spring or early summer.  As per Mr. Lipparelli, operators who have had their systems reviewed by test labs in the past could most likely be in operations by late December 2012 or early 2013.

News of PokerStars being allowed to operate in Belgium, they has been followed by news that the online poker company have now also been licensed in Malta and will be able to offer online poker to European players via a EU site.

Pokerstars is already licensed in the Isle of Man, France, Italy, Estonia and Denmark. Everyone must have heard of internet poker’s Black Friday. For those few who haven’t; on Friday the 15th of April 2011, the owners of the biggest internet poker sites, PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker, were arrested and their sites were shutdown in the United States after the Department of Justice accused them of money laundering and defrauding banks to get past gambling laws.

One of the main figures in this scandal is Ira Rubin. Rubin has helped the three internet  poker companies to transfer billions of dollars from their US customers to offshore havens. Rubin has pleaded guilty yesterday to charges of money laundering, bank and wire fraud, and gambling offenses. He could end up spending 55 years in prison. His sentence is due to be heard on the 17th of May 2012.

Rubin was arraigned last year by the F.B.I, who closed down PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker; the three biggest online poker companies in business in the United States, which ended in charges against 11 individuals.

Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney who announced the appeal deal said that Rubin assisted those three online poker companies with their payments processing by concealing those transactions so they’d be considered as non gambling related funds. Purchases by poker players appeared as if they were made at online stores buying various items.

Bharara added that in the wake of U.S Banks prohibiting the processing of online gambling payments, some companies had been dealing with third party payment service providers and some of those would mask those transactions as non internet gambling ones. And this is exactly what Rubin was delving into.

As regulated internet gambling is now legal in Belgium, the Belgian Gaming Commission has released its list of approved sites on which its citizens can wager. Out of this list, there are three online poker rooms, four online casinos and two online sports books. But the Belgian Gaming Commission will block access to all other unauthorized sites.
